He really didn't care

John 12:4-8 CSB
Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray him), said, [5] "Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" [6] He didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it. [7] Jesus answered, "Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial. [8] For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

The scriptures share what was inside Judas heart by yelling us that he was about to betray Jesus. Since this was the case with Jesus, his answer of caring for the poor was an attempt to make himself appear as a caring and loving person who really really wanted others to think "Oh, look how caring and loving this disciple was, so caring for others"

Let's look at the facts.

There were no poor people around them in this scene at the time. He was "making a scene" by his comment. He was implying that "we are doing a foolish thing by using the expensive oil for this cheap cause which is unwise because if you were smart like me and loving like me, you would see the value in selling this expensive oil and then with this new money you have acquired, to give food to those poor people outside who need it"

That was what Judas was implying.

Did you see it

What about you?

Do you see other people spending something as a treasure to God?

Cain did. He hated his brother Abel. He only wanted to kill his brother.

Cain killed his brother. He thought I can stand the sight of such a holy and good person being willing to offer so much to someone I find so I unworthy of a sacrifice.

Cain took matters into his own hands. Judas did too

Did you catch how Jesus responded to Judas?

Was Jesus upset? No
Did Jesus give Judas bad advice? No

Jesus did acknowledge the poor while at the same time acknowledging the sacrifice of a daughter of God.

Jesus accepted worship because He is God
Jesus knew what was inside Judas heart too.

Jesus knows what is inside out hearts too.

If we hide some hatred for others, God knows
If we hold a self-righteous attitude, Jesus knows

If we allow sin and don't acknowledge it, Jesus knows what we are not willing to give up and surrender.

What sins are you currently holding on too?
What false appearance of righteousness are you currently presenting?
